Auguste Salzmann was born in 1824 in Alsace, France. Salzmann began as a painter, but his interest in archaeology led him to join a trip to the Holy Land where he documented historical and religious sites. Two major albums of salt-prints were published by Blanquart-Evrard. His gaze is very modern and always places objects and places in context, without romanticism. Salzmann's images and compositions are carefully crafted pieces with an eye to detail. Auguste Salzmann is one of the finest 19th century photographers. His prints of Jerusalem are among the very earliest that have been made and those in good condition are rare collectors' items, worthy of museum collections.
