David Alexander studied at the Vancouver School of Art and Langara College, and graduated in 1978 with a BFA from Notre Dame University in Nelson, BC. In 1980 Alexander received his MFA from the University of Saskatchewan (Saskatoon) while researching in Paris, New York and London.
Alexander’s most recent series, “Wet,” is a departure from vast landscapes of his earlier work, and instead reexamines the traditional waterscape in new light. The deep pools of British Columbia’s interior serve as new avenues to approach painting nature. Research for Alexander’s art has led him on many journeys around the world, from the Southwest United States to the Canadian Arctic. Lengthy excursions allow him to truly experience a region on an intimate level.
Alexander is a nationally and internationally acclaimed painter, and has shown his work throughout Canada, the United States, and Europe. Alexander's works are in many public and private collections, including The Vancouver Art Gallery, The Institute of Art in Iceland, The Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs in Berlin, and the Canadian Embassy in Beijing. He is currently about to embark on a two-year excursion as a member of Nord 69, a group of artists, writers, and scientists that will sail around North America with the mission to raise awareness about ecology. Alexander’s next solo show will be at Foster/White Gallery in Pioneer Square in November of 2008.
