Gerald received his education at the University of Toronto. His photographic training came through a variety of formal and informal venues, including courses at Humber College and Ryerson Institute of Technology; workshops with Fred Picker, Freeman Patterson and Elizabeth Seigfried; and private study with Paul Hoeffler. Mostly, however, Gerald is self-taught.
Pisarzowski’s images combine the elements of places that many take for granted. He is fascinated with the juxtaposition of hard and soft forms, movement and scale. Gerald prefers to work in areas he knows best, returning over time to get beyond the obvious images and explore the more intrinsic qualities of the place.
Gerald has been applying this approach to such diverse scapes as Pine River/Scott’s Falls, the CNE Midway, Botanicals and his rediscovery of Newfoundland.
Working with both large and small format cameras, he prints his images in limited editions on hand-coated platinum paper. Platinum prints often better achieve the "feeling" which he wishes to express through his work.
Pisarzowski conducts workshops in landscape photography and in the art and alchemy of platinum printing. Gerald also provides custom platinum print-making services for other photographers. Currently, he is printing a limited edition platinum portfolio for the internationally acclaimed Canadian photographer Richard Harrington.
Pisarzowski’s own work has been shown at several galleries, a selected list includes Sacks Gallery, Art Gallery of Newfoundland, Art Gallery of Ontario (Print Sales & Rental Gallery), Spectrum Gallery (Rochester), the Alliance Francaise Gallery, Dufferin County Museum and Archive and the Stephen Bulger Gallery (Toronto). Several of his images were part of the Newfoundland Photography Project curated by Doug Townsend.
Gerald Pisarzowski's award-winning work is included in a number of corporate and private collections as well as in the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography and the City of Toronto Archives. He is represented by the Stephen Bulger Gallery in Toronto.
