As an architect, Gagliano is fascinated with the interplay between the planes and perpendiculars of buildings, the arches within a bridge, or the blurred line of a wall reflected in a canal. Water laps at mottled edges, light plays darkly among the shadows or fills the canvas, glowing to hint at dusk or daybreak. Warm Mediterranean colors contrast with cooler azures and midnight blues. In some paintings, stone towers are splashed against a softer landscape of bluffs. In others, details of old buildings are suggested with a few brush strokes.
A native of New York, Gagliano lived and worked in the Pacific Northwest for three decades. In 1999 he relocated his studio to Long Island, NY, where he lives and works with his wife, writer Ursula Hegi.
