Larry Towell, born 1953 in Chatham, Ontario, is Canada’s first Magnum photographer. He has been associated with their organization since 1988, and became a full member in 1993.
Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, David Seymour Chim & George Rodger founded magnum in 1947. Photographers Bruce Davidson, Elliot Erwitt, Josef Koudelka, Susan Meiselas, and Gilles Peress are but a few members of Magnum who act as both key witnesses and interpreters of world’s events. These photographers bridge and divide between journalism and art, the objective statement and the personal point of view.
Larry Towell has won many international photo awards including the Henri Cartier-Bresson Award (first recipient); the World Press Photo of the Year; The Hasselblad Award; The Alfred Eisenstadt Award; The Oskar Barnack Award; and the first Roloff Beny Book award for his 1997 monograph entitled El Salvador, amongst others. Larry’s photo stories have been published in many international magazines including; LIFE, The New York Times Magazine, Esquire, Elle, Rolling Stone, Geo, and Stern. He has had numerous one person and group exhibitions across Europe, the U.S., and Canada, and is in many public and private collections internationally. Phaidon Press publishes the current publication The Mennonites.
Larry Towell currently sharecrops a 75-acre in rural Ontario where he lives with his wife, two of his four children, and their three-legged dog named Banjo.
