For over twenty-five years, Mark Ruwedel (b. 1954, Bethlehem, PA) has photographed sites in the American West where historical and contemporary marks on the land exist as a geographical palimpsest.
Mark Ruwedel's photographs have been exhibited and collected widely, including at the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Princeton University Art Gallery, Trenton, New Jersey; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Chinati Foundation, Marfa, Texas; and the National Gallery, Canada.
Mark Ruwedel currently divides his time between Vancouver, British Columbia and Los Angeles, where he teaches photography at the California State University at Long Beach.
On June 16, 2008 a large monograph entitled: Westward the Course of Empire, published by Yale University Press, was released.
