Sebastião Salgado (Brazilian, b. 1944) has documented the quandary of the 20th century with remarkable talent and empathy: large-scale industrial manual labor, forced migration and the discrepancy between rich and poor. Salgado's life's work has set an example for "concerned photography," and the resulting documents of his travels have drawn worldwide acclaim.
Sebastião Salgado has been awarded virtually every major photographic prize in France, Germany, Holland, Spain, Sweden, and the United States including the W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography and the Hasselblad Award. In addition to his numerous accolades, Salgado was named Photographer of the Year on two occasions by the International Center of Photography.
