Thomas Ruff (German, b. 1958), the internationally renowned photographer, has claimed that "photography can only reproduce the surface of things" and "what people see, eventually, is only what's already inside them." For almost thirty years Ruff, a maverick artist, changing his method and style, has masterfully maintained a tension between what we see and what we think we see, making us captive to his imagery.
Thomas Ruff has exhibited in the U.S. and abroad for many years, including Sprengel Museum, the Tate, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the International Center of Photography and has participated in the Venice Biennial and Documenta.
