Originally trained as a sculptor, Vik Muñiz (Brazilian, b. 1961), uses unconventional materials, including chocolate syrup, sequins, and thread to recreate well-known works of art or images from popular culture. After his constructions are complete, he then photographs these new sculptural and appropriated “drawings.” Since the mid-1990s, Muñiz has earned an international reputation for the photographic pieces he creates out of these everyday materials. This visual trickery, in turn, subverts the photographic medium by revealing its own unreliability. Widely collected, Muñiz's has exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, The Art Institute of Chicago, the Tate Modern and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
