More
William Kentridge (South African, b. 1955) is the celebrated artist who combines the media of theatre, mime, sculpture, printmaking and drawing in his work. Kentridge's animated short films have transcended the medium of drawing and created a new vision, not only for his materials, but the use of stop-motion in contemporary art. Rapt in the history of South Africa's colonialism and apartheid, William Kentridge's work has since transcended the specific to engage a larger global audience.
William Kentridge has exhibited internationally, including shows at Hamburger Bahnhof, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The New Museum of Contemporary Art and has participated in Documenta and shows at the Hayward Gallery. In addition to the Carnegie Prize, William Kentridge was nominated for the Hugo Boss Prize in 1998.
