"As a Northwest native, the paintings I create are direct reflections of the surroundings into which I was born and continue to live. I am in awe of the Northwest terrain. The beauty of the ubiquitous mountains, water, clouds and forests inspire me to paint.
Literal interpretation is not my goal; rather it is to convey an emotion consistent with the spirit of the Northwest. Portraying multifarious layers of diffused light while using only subtle variations of color, I explore the reality of nature by attempting to transform the familiar, natural landscape into evocative renderings.
First, in deciding on a subject matter, I may study a certain type of tree or a stream from different angles. I might stare endlessly at branch formations or just catch a fleeting glimpse of water life. Or, I might focus on reflections in a water setting and notice the relation the angle of light has on what's reflected. The possibilities with the Northwest terrain in this regard are almost endless. With this information, I begin to prepare the canvas with layers of gesso. Of course, the subject of the painting affects the application; the number, thickness and style of the gesso layers.
I want to create movement and texture "beneath" the painting. In nature there is always movement; the wind rustling the leaves in the trees or water meandering through a forest – even the very movement of light. Motion is present and I try to convey its subtlety.
After the gesso is applied, I begin with numerous transparent layers of oils (glazes). As a result, these layers of oils maintain the light, and I believe the light emanating from the canvas is the most important aspect of my work. I then add additional layers of oils to solidify the composition. Finally, I utilize glazes and waxes to finish the surface, providing warmth and luster.
When interpreting a landscape, I often try to find modern perspectives. My work has evolved from painting distant landscapes and underwater landscapes to my current compositions of "in-the-forest," "water bank" and "macro" landscapes. My work, at times, leans towards the abstract yet still evokes a transcendent and genuine feeling of being able to enter, or step into, the paintings themselves – whether physically or mentally. The challenge is to create balance and contrast between light and dark, traditional and modern, boldness and serenity while at all times maintaining honesty."
