Born in Los Angeles in 1940, Tony Angell moved to the Pacific Northwest in 1959 to attend the University of Washington on a track scholarship. He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees in speech communication, and became a teacher shortly thereafter. Although Angell never formally trained as an artist, he has incredible natural talent; his paintings, drawings, and sculptures are rendered with meticulous accuracy. Angell’s family was instrumental in encouraging his creativity, his mother’s paintings taught him composition and fluidity; his grandfather, a craftsman and woodworker, taught him to work with his hands. Angell’s father also demonstrated the importance of strong intellect and a sharp eye while working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Wild animals have a constant presence in Angell’s life and he continuously draws inspiration from the natural world around him. As a teacher, artist, environmental educator and advocate, Angell feels a certain connection and responsibility to nature. He is especially fascinated by ravens, owls, hawks, eagles, falcons, and ducks, and has spent a significant amount of time researching the behavior of these birds. Bronze and stone sculptures, prints and drawings showcase Angell’s expertise, knowledge and precision.
Angell has illustrated and co-authored many articles and books. His most recent book, “In the Company of Crows and Ravens,” which he co-wrote with J. Marzluff, was published in 2005. The book was awarded the First Place (Book Illustration) and Overall Winner awards for the illustrations in 2006 by the Victoria & Albert (V&A) Museum in London. Angell has exhibited consistently throughout the United States since 1970, and his work can be found in many private collections and in the public collections including the Frye Art Museum in Seattle; the Museum of Wildlife in Jackson, Wyoming; the Seattle Aquarium; the Seattle Woodland Park Zoo; and Cornell University.
Foster/White Gallery is pleased to announce Tony Angell’s new book will be release in spring 2009.
